Dr Charles Shepherd - Living With M.E. :: Book Review

A book review of Dr Charles Shepherd's Living With M.E. below...

A favorite 'all-round' book on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS), Chronic Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME)...

If there’s a book that can really be called the ‘bible’ for ME/CFS sufferers, then Living With M.E. by Dr Charles Shepherd is it. Having read raving reviews about this book by other ME/CFS sufferers, I decided to buy a copy of Dr Charles Shepherd 's book, to see for myself. And I must say, it’s very comprehensive!

The only downside is that it is now somewhat dated. A lot of research and discoveries have materialized since its publication, so that's something to bear in mind when reading the book. But they may have published a new edition by the time you read this review.

I like the fact that Living With M.E. is written by someone who is not only a doctor, and sufferer of ME/CFS , but who is also the Medical Director of the UK's M.E. Association. So I guess that makes Dr Charles Shepherd more than qualified to write a book on the subject! And Charles Shepherd really has done a great job. Charles Shepherd , Living With M.E. , book

A word of warning though....

Living With M.E. is like a ‘ME/CFS ’ encyclopaedia and it reads like one. So it's certainly not 'light reading'. But it's a book that you can dip into when you need to. You can learn about some of the treatment options that you have as a ME/CFS /PVFS sufferer - both orthodox and alternative. But Dr Charles Shepherd goes much further than that…

Dr Charles Shepherd tells you about which state benefits you can apply for as a ME/CFS /PVFS sufferer, how to deal with the practicalities of ME/CFS /PVFS, and how you can cope better emotionally.

It's also worth noting here that Dr Charles Shepherd wrote Living With M.E. for UK sufferers, so if you live outside the UK, the chapters on state benefits etc. will not be applicable to you. But it's still definitely worth reading because it talks about lots of other interesting topics besides (including treatments).
