Basically, your brain makes serotonin during the day and turns it into melatonin (melatonin hormone ) when the light starts to dim.

That’s why melatonin is often referred to as ‘the hormone of darkness’

…it’s literally activated by darkness!

In fact, very strong light (like sunlight) turns off your melatonin production completely ! (melatonin hormone )
