Valeriana officinalis

Valerian is widely used to treat insomnia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), pain, tension, anxiety, and over-excitability.

It’s also a popular herbal alternative to benzodiazepines and other sleep medications.

This is because Valerian is a safe and gentle, relaxing and sleep-inducing herb.

Valerian is said to have no side effects or dangers of addiction which is perhaps why the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) classes Valerian as a “class 1” safety rating (meaning that it’s a safe herb with a wide dosage range).

Research has shown that Valerian can reduce the time it takes you to fall asleep and can even improve the quality of your sleep!

This is great news if you suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia because you’re likely to have a sleep rhythm abnormality which prevents you from getting enough good quality sleep.

roots valerian Valerian acts as a central nervous system depressant, so it’s not a good idea to take it every night.

What’s more, Valerian doesn’t suit everyone so you may find that it’s just not for you. In some occasional cases, it can even cause excitement instead of calm!

You shouldn’t take Valerian if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
